Actually it’s green
Now, it’s never been a bright pink, more green with pink stripes/splashes of pink but this year its totally green and frankly it’s no use to me with a family who point blank refuses to eat green rhubarb.
So off I went on the rhubarb trail trying to find out why this year its green.
The rhubarb I grow is Victoria and comes in all shades from fuchsia pink to green. Some varieties never go pink.
“I never knew that! I thought all rhubarb was pink.. oh what a sheltered life I’ve led.”
Still, it didn’t explain why mine was pink and is now green, though it still tastes the same if not slightly sweeter..
If only I could convince my family that its safe to eat and I’m not trying to poison them.. Lol
Anyway.. after a lot of time spent on google I came across a site that suggested the ph of the soil could be the reason and I should fork wood ash around the crown at the end of the season then next spring my rhubarb will be pink again.. Brilliant!!
Hope it works or it will be there solely for the compost bin
No one else will eat it apart from me!

N’owt so queer as folk – so they say! Is it the taste of green rhubarb they don’t like or the look of it?
Because it’s green they think it will taste really sour, when actually there’s no difference in how it tastes and yes, its the green that puts them off ..
They are a fussy lot..
Hi Dee, thanks for the comment on my blog, I’m glad you left one as it got me over here visiting yours. How odd that your rhubarb is all green, I have never heard of that before. I hope the ash works for you as I have to say it would be nicer to see it pink even if it does taste the same. Perhaps you could fool your family and try rhubarb and raspberries ! it’s a tasty combination and would add the colour for you. Mx
I do wish we could get an allotment. On the list for one but expecting an 18 year wait!!
Our garden rhubarb has always been green. I thought pink rhubarb was just the early forced, grown in the dark crop. Try hiding it in muffins – the family won’t know what colour it was.
18 years..Is that all – not too long a wait then..Lol
Think its around 6 years on my site. When I got mine 4 years ago they couldn’t give them away we got the first years rent free !
Thanks for the follow on twitter!
At least your family will eat rhubarb pink. My family won’t eat it any way, pink or green….LOL. Good thing I love rhubarb. Wood ash does seem to help. I apply a dusting every fall to my rhubarb and it’s always been pink. Hungry feeder that rhubarb. Your garden looks lovely by the way.
Oh good I wasn’t sure if it would help as you come across conflicting advice on the net. I usually apply some manure in Autumn – I’ll switch to wood ash this year and see if that helps Thanks for visiting Debbie.
